Deptford Wives

Bookwriter & Lyricist

Stage musical, based on Jennie Buckman’s award-winning radio play.

In the 1770s, Mary Lacy, a poor girl from Kent, disguised herself as a man and joined the British Navy. She worked as an apprentice shipwright, but when her gender was discovered, she was expelled from the Navy and became an architect, building a row of houses and creating Deptford High Street.

With its punchy, modern score, this musical explores the passionate love affair between Mary and her soon-to-be ‘wife’, Elizabeth Slade.
